Empty Rooms

Night is falling, crickets calling
They fill the autumn sky,
I sit alone outside this home
A home no longer mine.
The lights are out, the doors are locked
It’s time to say goodbye.
Scores of seasons, thirty years
Beneath this sturdy roof,
A newborn child was welcomed here
And her own baby too.
Lives well lived, now life goes on
It’s time to start anew.
But something beckons me inside
The old house one more time,
In the dark, my feet avoid
A chair no longer there…
My footsteps echo in empty rooms
But are they really bare?
The echoes I hear are voices clear
Laughter and children’s cries,
Silent music in the air
Moments frozen in time,
Far from empty, the rooms are brimming
Whirling with memories.
I am filled with grateful tears
For these meaningful years.
As one door closes another opens
With promise and new dreams.
The night is soft, the crickets cry
I wave a fond good-bye.

The Loyalist
03:16
|
|||
John is the best of men-
In June he asked for my hand.
Now he must hide and flee-
He promised to send for me….
Ride on, ride on, to the north dear John
Like the wind, due North ride on.
Ride on, ride on where the heart will lead
To be loyal now you must leave,
To be loyal you must leave.
Minute men hastle and jeer-
Rebellion has followed us here.
Neighbours who once were near-
Now give us reason to fear.
Now all alone I remain-
In dreams I’m calling his name.
Nothing for months have I seen-
Please don’t forget about me.
Ride on, ride on to the north dear John
Like the wind due North ride on.
Ride on, ride on where the heart will lead
To be loyal now you must leave,
To be loyal you must leave.
Father would have me stay-
And weather the storm as we may.
Soon it will be too late-
And time will have written our fate.
Finally word has arrived-
My John is well and alive!
“Mary come be my wife-
We’ll farm and start a new life.”
But where should my loyalty be?
John, King or family.
How can I make such a choice?
I suddenly hear my own voice!
I ride, I ride in my cloak I hide
Like the wind due north I ride,
I ride, I ride where my heart will lead
To be loyal now I must leave,
To be loyal I must……
Ride , I ride in my cloak I hide.
Like the wind due north I ride.
I ride, I ride where the heart will lead,
To be loyal now I must leave,
To be loyal I must leave.

Sharing the Moon
03:22
|
|||
I look through the window out onto the roof
Trying to get close to the stars,
Daylight has faded but not thoughts of you
Though you've been gone so long and so far,
There's a half moon rising over the hills
I hear the lonely call of a loon,
Wish I may, wish I might have the wish I wish tonight
But when I wish for you, all I can do
Is share half of the moon.
There was no good-bye when you went away,
No words to help understand,
Just vanishing light to silence the day
Like footprints washed in the sand,
I keep searching the sky and asking it why
You had to go oh-so-soon
Wish I may, wish I might have the wish I wish tonight
But when I wish for you, all I can do
Is share half of the moon.
La, la, la, la, la la la...
The shadows are mysterious, silent and still
On the dark side of the moon
I can't hear your voice, I can't see your smile,
Can only savour the memory of you,
Sometimes I cry as the hours go by
While I sit here up in my room
Wish I may, wish I might have the wish I wish tonight
But when I wish for you all I can do
Is share half of the moon
Wish I may, wish I might have the wish I wish tonight
But when I wish for you all I can do
Is share my half of the moon.

Blue Sky Boy
02:48
|
|||
Oh where did you go little blue sky boy
Your face full of freckles and your head curly red,
You ran across the street and fell into the cracks
We didn’t know how to fix you and you never came back.
Oh where did you go little bow-tie boy
With your school photo innocence and impish smile,
You went searching for fame in your father’s eyes
Your middle name, Potential, never realized.
You could have been an artist, you played a mean guitar,
But you squandered your gifts, they didn’t get you far,
No one could fix you but you found a fix alright
In the dark underbelly of the city’s ether nights.
In corner stores and alley ways you shook some dirty hands
Your colour faded, eyes jaded, skin plagued with scabs,
Tormented and afraid, alone without a home
You fell into the cracks and you never came back.
My brother used to row a boat on lazy afternoons
While fishing on a shining lake echoing with loons,
He is earth, air and water now, his ashes in the wind
His blue sky soul at rest where everything begins.

Pajarito de primavera
Soñando con los amores
Dame tu alegría
Y comparta tus colores
Tu que sigues el destino
Sin contemplar otro camino
Tu vives en el momento
Cantando con viva voz
Ay, ay de mí!
Quiero tus alas y tu canción
Pa’ levantar la melancolía
Que anubla mi corazón
El calendario avanzando
Gira el sol y los recuerdos
Aniversarios y cumpleaños
La distancia y la ausencia
Bajo el cielo infinito
Se despiertan las semillas
Creciendo y floreciendo
Sin pensar ni lamentar
Ay, ay de mí!
Anímame con tu ardor
La luna sigue alumbrando
Y sigue calentando el sol
Little Spring Bird
With courting on your mind
You follow your destiny
And live in the moment
Oh me oh my!
Give me your wings
And share your joy,
Lift the cloud that shades my heart.
The calendar circles the sun and memories,
birthdays and anniversaries,
distances and absences,
and under an infinite sky
new seeds awaken
to grow and flourish
without a sorrow or care
Oh me oh my!
Lend me your cheer!
The moon will still light the night
and the sun will still shine
